Everything you wanted to know about the Security+ SY0-601 but were afraid to ask!

CompTIA Security+ is the top cyber security certification. Security+ certification is in high demand and continues to serve as a fundamental certification for professionals starting an IT career or others wanting to build a career in cyber security. On top of that, Security+ certification is also approved by the Department of Defense (DoD) to meet Directive 8570.01 -M requirements. If you’re seeking employment in the government, then it is a required certification. CompTIA Security+ SY0-501 is the current Security+ exam and will be available to take until the Spring of 2021. However, the Security+ SY0-601 is scheduled to be released in October of 2020. What is on the current CompTIA Security+ SY0-501
The 501 exam focuses on these skill areas:
- Threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities
- Tools and technologies
- Architecture and design
- Identity and access management
- Risk management
- Cryptography and PKI
CompTIA Security+ SY0-601 Exam
The 601 exam will cover the same skill areas reflected in the SY0-501. However, some of these areas will include additional information. Expect to see changes in the following areas:
- Threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities
- Hands on use of Tools and Technologies
- Risk Management

The additional information is expected to include the following:
- Cloud support
- Security for modified virtualization platforms
- Mobile device security issues
- In depth analysis of monitoring tools
- Additional information on network access control models
- Common mobile device manufacturer issues
- Questions covering SSo multifactor authentication techniques and tools
- Best practices for Cyber Security threats
- Penetration tests
- Vulnerability scans

In addition, expect to see more performance-based questions (PBQs) on SY0-601.
Which exam should you take?
Professionals should decide to take each exam based on their individual needs and timeline. Both exams will teach you how to recognize and manage security threats, but if you’re ready right now SY0-501 is the only exam available until October.
If you can wait until October, the SY0-601 will include updates based on the nature of the current cyber security environment and issues that cyber security professionals are battling today. If you decide to prepare for SY0-601 make sure that your exam preparation is appropriate to that exam!
